Introduction

I began running Windows 7 in Dual mode with Windows XP in the Virtual Machine because I had a gut feeling I would discover ways of doing things under Windows 7 that I would like to make part of my repertoire, but at the same time I did not want to suddenly stop using applications I have become familiar with and embark upon a venture with a hazy idea of the goal the effort is directed towards.

I made a fresh install of Windows 7, Ultimate edition, 32-bit on a notebook computer that according to its manufacturer and a Microsoft detection program is virtual machine capable and BIOS enabled. After completing the installation I validated as genuine, activated, and updated Windows 7. Then I did the same for Windows XP Professional.

A coupe of weeks have gone by, during this time I installed applications and connected peripheral devices, read the manuals, and scripted workflows. Now I feel I am ready to articulate questions about how to cultivate a migration away from Windows XP to Windows 7.

I decided to do something I have never done before – blog. At fist my statements may sound like they should be directed to the Complaint Department, but in the age of multi-core processors and Nehalem architecture, I believe VM technology will become a practical means for running dissimilar software side-by-side on the desktop. I thought Blogging would provide a centralized place for posing questions, where I could direct people to, and this might serve as a means for finding the solutions I seek.

1st Question

I have a laser printer wirelessly connected to a router using 802.11B protocol. All the PCs on my LAN can connect to the printer but one. The VirtualPC running Windows XP does not connect to the printer. Even though the printer has an IP address in the router’s DHCP table. I can not ping it from Virtual XP's Command line. How does networking a VM work?

I went to Event Viewer > System and found:
- Warning Printer Microsoft XPS Document Writer is purged
- Warning Printer Microsoft XPS Document Writer is pending deletion
- Warning Printer Microsoft XPS Document Writer was deleted
- Error Driver Brother HL-2170 required for printer Printer is unknown
- Error Driver Brother HL-2170 required for printer Printer is unknown
- Error Driver MS Shared Fax Driver required for printer PrinterFX is unknown

Can someone explain why Microsoft XPS Document Writer is being purged in the Virtual Machine? What triggers this?

March 12, 2010

Microsoft confirmed today that security update for its Excel Spreadsheet had turned English text in an important Windows tool into Chinese. The admission was the second in the past two days from Microsoft's Office team of a gaffe involving a recent security update.

Fridays announcement involved the seven-patch update Microsoft shipped out on Tuesday for Excel. "We have received reports from some of our Excel 2003 and Excel 2002 customers that after installing update KB978471 or KB978474, they are seeing non-English text in the "Add or Remove Programs" tool Windows XP or the View (Vista, Windows 7), Microsoft said in an entry published early today on the "Office Sustaining Engineering" blog.

The two updates Microsoft referenced KB978471 and KB978474, were the patch collections for Excel 2002 and Excel 2003, respectively.

According to Microsoft, the patches are displayed in "Add or Remove Programs" in simplified Chinese rather than the intended English. "If English text..... is a requirement, there is a two part workaround available," said Microsoft as it told users to first uninstall Tuesday's Excel update, then download and install a revamped version.

Todays snafu wasn't as serious as the one Microsoft acknowledged Thursday, also on the Office Blog. Yesterday, the company confirmed that a February 9th non-essential hot fix that added support for Net 4.0 to Office 2007 caused the suites programs to crash when they were run on Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows Server 2008 with Terminal Services. Some users claimed that the update also made Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) crash when working with Share Point 2007. Microsoft yanked the hot fix- which was served in limited fashion last month and then more widely via Microsoft Update starting last Tuesday- and replaced it with another that corrected the crash problem. The crash making Hot fix was also pulled Thursday from Windows Server Update Services (Wsus), the patch management system that many businesses use to distribute security and other fixes to company PC's.

Microsoft has had a string of update problems this year, the most widely reported a February patch for a 17 year old vulnerability that caused computers to lock up and display the dreaded "Blue Screen Of Death" error message. Microsoft withdrew the update within two days, and later said that only PC's infected with "Root-kit" had been affected.

How do users operate when they visit this forum (or any other)
I have never posed a question, so regard myself as being in a "help" category. To merely select "New Posts", unless you are a very prolific poster, with time on your hands, can reveal a mass of material, a lot of which, if one is honest, the user rends to skip over without opening.
I, like many, have quite a few forums in my bookmarks. Several of these are being totally swamped by material which, in my particular case, is totally irrelevant.
In order to "get through the day", I worked out a system which, with practise, is not time consuming and gets the subject matter revealed in a summarised format. I have noticed, however, that there is a trend to post links as help, instead of opening a more friendly and informal dialogue.
As I see it, posting links indicates that any intelligent computer user, could browse for his answer anyway, and not even bother to use forums.
First thing I do is click Windows Rumours and news forum entries. I get this material through other news sources, so have no need for it. I then select the "Forum Tools" option and mark the forum as read.
I do the same with Security Zone and the Water cooler.
This eliminates about 70% of the "New Posts" and allows me to view the remainder more comfortably.
The "Open topic" forum, I keep at the moment. It has a tendency to merge its contents with the Water Cooler, but still has interesting chat items.

If your a Windows user, live in the E.U. and use the Internet your probably aware of the recent debacle over I.E. This is in regard to Microsoft shipping their browser with their OS as an only choice.
It is thought that while there are alternatives to IE the public is often unaware of these choices until they become more 'Internet savvie' and this update has been created to address this oversite..

So what does this mean if you already have a browser thankyou very much? Well basically just ignore it. The first screen announces the update like thus:

Once you've clicked 'OK' then the next screen rapidly follows...

Above are the current choices and as I'm happy with IE I clicked on that. This then revealed the screen below. If your happy with your current set-up then just close the update window and forget about it. :)

Microsoft® Office 2010 Beta

With the release of the Microsoft® Office 2010 beta many people have been looking forward to the new changes and enhancements. Although it is too early to tell what Microsoft has planned for the final release of Office, a preview of the beta gives us a hint. The most noticeable changes made to the popular office suite are seen in the interface. Microsoft® Office 2010 features a new animated splash screen while starting any of the Office products. The ribbon toolbar has also been slightly modified, but it still looks much like that in Office 2007. The only distinct difference seen is the addition of the “File” tab, which replaces the Office button seen in Office 2007. Clicking on the “File” tab opens up a new view in Office 2010 called Microsoft® Backstage. It allows users to more easily find and access basic controls like printing and viewing documents, slides, or spreadsheets. Backstage along with the new ribbon toolbar have been added to Outlook and OneNote. The ribbon toolbar now allows for users to customize the ribbon, unlike Office 2007 where users were limited to only customizing the Quick Access Toolbar. Users can add new controls or hide the ribbon toolbar altogether. Here are some of the changes I noticed.

Text effects: This feature is similar to the effects you can add to text using the WordArt feature in PowerPoint 2007. Unfortunately, Word 2007 still used the old WordArt effects as seen in previous versions of Office. Microsoft® Office 2010 fixes that issue by giving Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook the same WordArt effects.

Background Removal Tool: This feature does exactly what it sounds like. It removes the background in images.

Navigation Pane: This feature allows a user to navigate through the document by heading, by page, or by searching for text or objects.

Screen Capture: This tool allows for users to select an area of the screen to make into an image of. The image is then placed into the document, spreadsheet, or slide.

Sparklines: This allows for Excel to insert data charts. Sparklines present trends and variations associated with some measurement. You have most likely seen one of these critters on TV or in the newspaper, showing trends in the stock market.

OpenDocument Format: Although this feature is not new to Office, I thought it would be important to bring up. Office 2010 now supports OpenDocument format version 1.1. This format is a common format supported by various office suites (both stand-alone and web-based).

Protected Mode: Office may enter this mode when opening files from an untrusted or potentially unsafe location (like the internet). It will hide the ribbon toolbar and restrict editing. Users can click the “Enable Editing” button to start editing the file.

Simultaneous Editing: Office allows for a document to be opened and edited by different people (or the same person from a different computer). A notification in the status bar displays who is currently viewing your file and shows what changes are being made.

PowerPoint Broadcasting: Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010 can broadcast PowerPoint presentations to people on different computers around the globe. For people who don’t have Microsoft PowerPoint, presentations can be broadcast as videos.

Office 2010 64-bit: Office 2010 will come in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions. This means people who own a computer capable of 64-bit can take advantage of the enhanced performance their computer can offer. Users can more easily open, save, and manage memory intensive documents easier.

PowerPoint Videos: PowerPoint 2010 can more easily insert video files into slide shows. The quality of videos is much better than in previous versions of Office. Users can edit their videos right within the slide by trimming and adding effects. The following formats are supported:

AVI

WMV

WMA

MP3

MOV

H.264

The supported video formats can be extended by installing DirectShow codecs.

Microsoft announced today two new updates will be shipped out on Tuesday (March 9th) at 1:00 pm ET. The 1st update addresses one or more vulnerabilities in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. And affects the most recent service packs for XP and Vista, SP3 and SP2, respectively both 32- and 64- bit editions.

The 32- and 64 bit editions of all three operating systems harbor the bugs, according to a terse description in the Microsoft notice. Both updates deal with bugs that can be exploited only if users are tricked into opening a malicious file. Deals with vulnerabilities with malicious code being introduced into an un-patched computer and remote code execution.

The 2nd update will quash one or more bugs in Excel 2002, Excel 2003, and Excel 2007 on Windows. Excel 2004 and Excel 2008 on MAC. The patches will repair the version in Excel in Office 2007 SP2. It's the latest and greatest that is being patched. A newer file format is coming which is said to be safer.
