Hi,

The CPU in my PC (upgraded to Win 7 Home Premium x 64 from XP Pro) Dell OptiPlex 520 is (Pentium D 2.8GHz) old and slow. The MoBo model: Dell 0RJ290. BIOS is v.11.
What CPU with max. performance is acceptable for this MoBo, if at all?
My goal is to speed up my PC on the cheap.
Would Microsoft require a new product key or refuse giving out one, or the present key will suffice?
Thank you

I'm thinking about getting some new RAM, not because I usually don't have enough, but occasionally for reasons unknown to me, RAM usage will spike and cause the system to freeze. It doesn't even have to hit 100%, because when it exceeds 80% it may freeze or at least cause things to become sluggish.

I started out to buy a couple of sticks matching what I now have (Patriot PGS34g1600LLKA) but it appears that version has been discontinued.

I then found some used Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1600C92x8GB Kits available at the right price, but it isn't listed on the QVL for my motherboard. I know that other RAM will usually work fine, as long as it is within specs, but it still makes me a bit hesitant to buy something unknown.

The Corsair RAM in the QVL that qualifies for my motherboard is of a lower CAS, but I think that the motherboard should handle it (9-9-9-24) 1.65v, but it never really has handled the Patriot RAM that I have very well, because I actually had to under-clock it slightly to get it to work.

Should this work, or should I anticipate having problems with it?

The front cases' and computers back audio jack are not working, I have tried numerous headphones and speakers.

I have the following USB devices:

USB Joypad
Sony Miro Xperia mobile phone
Wireless Transceiver for Keyboard and Mouse

these are all in USB 2.0 ports.

I ran a program called DSL stats that I have used before but was a new version, when I ran it there was some odd behaviour and the screen logged out (went black like it does when you log out) a pause, then the ding-dong and logged back in where it said USB device failed and my wifi had been disconnected and reconnected too...

I looked in DevMgr and noticed me Xperia Miro and USB Joypad were no longer working, no matter what I did I could not get them working again, the only way I could was to uninstall device, remove device, turn off PC, turn off Power, turn on Power, log into windows, plug device into different USB port and it would install... the Xperia Miro has stayed installed but as soon as I reboot the computer the USB JoyPad fail again...error code 43, if I uninstall it, force check for hardware changes and re-install...it will reboot, login and start to install the driver and say it was successfull but devmgr shows that its not (error code 43).

I even restored the computer to before I run this new version of DSL Stats but no avail, I had also installed Avast Internet Security the night before and think it may have been related as DSL stats runs perfectly nowive removed Avast IS.

just for info: DSL Stats is a router stats program made by Roseway on Kitz forums, its great and suggest anyone into that stuff to try it, its better than DMT Tool

so can anyone help me repair this corrupt USB driver that windows keeps installing?
in my optical drive, and also play the CD on the CD player attached to my audio system.
Now, when I burn a recording, the burn goes to completion, and when I reinsert the burned
CD in to the optical drive the music plays perfectly on my PC. When I place the new CD into CD player on my audio system, nothing happens, I tested the CD on my daughters CD player,
and it doesn't play, likewise on a CD player at a local electronic store. I haven't changed any
of the settings in Windows Media Player, so I need some help!!

Hello Everyone,
I am new to the forums and say hello to all!! I programmed with Visual Basic 5, ASP and HTML4 back in the early 2000's. I build all my computers also. My question is, I am getting back into it and need to know if the programmers of today would use my set up that I am about to build.
The specs would be: Asus P8B75-M/CSM (i3,i5,i7 cpu, 32GB ram max)
i3 or i5 Intel CPU
16GB ram
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.
Visual Basic 6
Thank you,
Cheers,

I Just had to replace my motherboard and power supply due to my old PSU dying (and you know that it is rare that the PSU dying doesn't kill the MOBO or something else). Now it is just randomly shutting down (without a BSOD sadly). Sometimes it is just random, just sometimes it is either during internet browsing, playing Half Life 2 Deathmatch (usually when at Skul`Shock), or video editing (that was a recent one). Here are my specs.

ASRock N6-8C GS FX Motherboard
COOLMAX 600W Power Supply
Windows 7 Gamer Edition (x64)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX-550 Ti (1GB GDDR5)
2 Seagate HDD's (x1 500GB and x1 1TB)
8GB DDR2 RAM by KomputerBay (Samsung rip-off)
AMD Athlon II x4 630 (2.8 GHz)
No Overclocking is being run, at least I don't think so...
TSSTcorp DVD drive
x2 Monitors (HP S2031 20" and HP W2071d 20" through VGA to DVI connectors.)

Any help is GREATLY! appreciated. Thank You!

I have seen this issue on the forum before, but I have yet to find a solution. Hope I'm a lucky one.

I turned on the computer this evening and it gave me the "Windows was not Shut Down Properly" message followed by the options to start in Safe Mode, or Start Normally. I started it up normally, and all looked well.

However, when I went to type in my password, nothing happened.

No response from the keyboard in any way. I tried moving it to different ports, but no luck.

Then I saw that my wife's portable hard drive was plugged in. Since my computer's BIOS is set to try and boot from any CD or USB device plugged in, I'm guessing it tried to boot from her hard drive and something went nuts.

The mouse still works, and the keyboard will work in BIOS and when messing around in Windows System Recovery Options.

Here is a list of what I have tried so far:

- I tried moving the keyboards plug to different USB ports.

- I tried restarting my computer.

- I tried Startup Repair (multiple times).

- I tried a System Restore, but 3/4 the way through it said that one of the backed up files was incomplete, and now I can't find any backups to restore from.

- I tried to use the On Screen Keyboard to get into my account. However, the On Screen Keyboard doesn't work for reasons I cannot fathom.

- I can access the Command Prompt from the System Recovery Options, and get into regedit from that, but I don't want to tamper with something that I hardly understand.

I could reinstall, but I'd rather see what options are open to me first.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional. If you need any other info, please ask.

I wasn't sure where else to post this, so I'd thought I'd post it here, since I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the hardware, most likely the MOBO or something.

I recently upgraded my Roommate's computer, we had a few issues already, apparently it was BIOs issues, since it was working fine after a fresh install.

The thing is now though, and it happened before too, is that even after turning off the standby settings, the Monitor still insists on going into Standby, even after we turned off the settings, this only started after using the Motherboard's Core Unlocker to revamp it's power.

The MOBO is an ASUS M5A 88-V EVO, Processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 Black, there's 8 GB of RAM installed, a Cooler Master Extreme 2 725 PSU, and it's running Windows 7 SP1 64-Bit.

So Ive just gotten my PC back from repair; everything is working perfectly, except for a HDD.

I have 3 drives, one being a SSD with the OS on it, the other two being WesternDigital 1TB drives. The problem is that one of the two HDDs is recognized, but not intractable.

The repaired PC came back freshly re-installed (on the SSD), and I proceeded to format the two unformatted HDDs using Disk Services. I had no problem formatting the first drive (a WD1002FAEX-0). But the second behaves very strangely (an old WD10EAVS-00D).

It is recognized by the BIOS, post and device manager and listed there alongside its companions with the correct storage space. But in the Disk Services, "datenträger2" (data storage device 2, i have windows in German) is listed but does not have a volume; the bar is simply empty and grey. Right clicking it gives me the options to convert it to a dynamic drive/ GPT drive (both of which don't work), but the two top sections used for formatting are greyed out.

I checked multiple times if the SATA and power plugs are in correctly, but i cannot verify if the disk is spinning (too loud PC).

I am using an ASUS p8p67, and all other components are working fine.

Thanks for any help,

I need to replace a fan in my HTPC, but I have a couple of questions. first, how is a fluid ball bearing different from a regular ball bearing fan? Secondly, one fan caught my eye:
EverCool 80mm x 80mm x 38mm EC8038H12BA 12V 3pin Ball Bearing Fan | eBay

I'm not as interested in the high speed of the fan as I am the thickness (38mm). Am I right in thinking that a thicker fan will produce more CFM than a thin fan at the same speed?

I intend to use this for the blow hole fan atop the HTPC in my bedroom, and since I keep it running continuously, I definitely do not want a high noise level, and I don't know that high CFM is actually a good thing for a fan of this sort, because at high CFM, it might disturb the air flow pattern adversely. But since this fan cost twice as much as most other fans of it's size, my interest in it is just in having the ability to experiment with different speed settings.
