A variation on similar problems others have had.
I have had my network running for a couple years without problems. I'm using Comcast Business Class broadband with a static IP and a Linksys E3000 router for a home business network. Four wired computers and the rest are wireless for a total of (22) nodes. All set up with static IPs.
Over the weekend I tried to add a wireless security camera and part of the installation required accessing my router. When I attempted to login to the router I found my password access no longer worked. I ended up having to do a factory default restore. I have printouts of my original setting so I recreated the original settings for my WAN side and LAN side, set up for static and set the range for DHCP IP's. Two of the wired computers are working as they should, the wireless seem to be working. Two wired computers are not.
The problem is.....When I set up the IP configuration as static in my main computer and close the system manager the computer sees the network and internet for about 30 to 60 seconds and then drops the default gateway IP address. Go back in and check the settings and the gateway address field is blank, all the rest of the settings are intact. Repeat, good for 30 to 60 and goes blank again. Checked ipconfig/all, did the ipconfig/release, uninstalled the network card and let the system reinstall, same problem. Tried giving up on static setting for the moment and thought the system was working but then is started dropping the internet and network again. I'm running ot of options.
The two computers that DON'T work are my main server that runs the accounting software that is synced with the internet ecommerce website and the shipping department funning UPS Worldship and Quantum view. Without these two computers I'm out of business! I have orders to fill and can't! The only other think I can think of is I used Cisco Connect to do the initial configuration for the router and ran it from the main computer. Wondering if is set something in the registry that is trying to override the static setting?
Even a friend of mine that is in charge of network IT has been unsuccessful with this.
I need help FAST!

I have a Netgear WNDR3700 router (v4) which I got a couple of months ago to replace my dying router. It comes with a ReadyShare USB to Network device portal which allows me to hook up a USB HDD and use it as a network drive. The speeds aren't all that fast, but, for my current purposes it suits just fine.

My problem is that I shut down my computer about 3-4 days ago and it installed some updates. Since then, I have not been able to see my ReadyShare HDD in the Network map. Previously I had access to it on my Windows 7 system (64 bit). Thing is, the ReadyShare HDD is working just fine because my 32-bit Vista Laptop can see it right now.

I'm not really sure what happened.

My Wi-Fi router is located on the other end of our house. I can connect to it with my laptop but my wife can't with her iPhone. Since I leave my laptop in our bedroom, I thought I'd try to set it up as a Wi-Fi access point, then she can connect to the internet though my laptop.

Currently I have my laptop configured as a hosted network, but the "wireless network connection 2" says I don't have internet access. When I check off the box in properties>sharing, that says "allow other network users to connect to through this computers internet connection", I lose MY wireless connection.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a write-up on this? Is what I'm trying to do impossible?

FWIW, I'm running Windows 7 on a Sony Vaio laptop with an Atheros AR9285 network adapter.

I just had to format my home PC due to various issues; however, since then, I cannot access a shared folder on my room-mate's PC that I was able to access before the format.

We both have Windows 7, we are connected to the same homegroup. I can SEE his PC and can click it, it shows the folders, but when I click I get
"Network Error
Windows cannot access \\[his PC]]\Shared Folder"
As I said, we were able to share and access this way before, but not now?
Network Discovery, File and Printer Sharing, Public Folder Sharing, Media Streaming and Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections are all "On", and it's set to allow 128-bit encryption.

I vaguely recall having to set up one other thing, but neither of us can find them any more.

Always before my computer would auto-detect and connect when plugged in. That didn't happen this time so I set up a broadband connection by hand.

Hello guys,

Since two days ago I simply can't connect with my home wifi network, or the connection is lost after 20 minutes or so and from that time my home network doesn't even appear in the avaliable networks list... (Ethernet connection is working fine.) I have nothing changed in my laptop that could interfere with wifi connection. I have another laptop and mobile phone that have no problem at all connecting with the same wifi network.

I tried to reset/power off the router, this didn't solve the problem. Tried to update and uninstall/reinstall the drivers (WIFI card: Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN), but still without resolving the problem.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Thank you for the time

I recently read an article on using a Raspberry Pi as a proxy server. The article talked about using my laptop on a public WiFi and how that's not secure (which is why I don't use public WiFi for anything that requires security such as banking etc).

The article talked about setting up an SSH tunnel from the laptop to your RasPi (which is at home and you'd have a DynDNS account pointing to the house).

This sounds like something that I'd definitely like to do as it would certainly be nice to be able to do my banking when at the hotel. Same for letting Quicken 2013 sync to their cloud service.

So the first question now: Is it possible to open a tunnel that routes ALL internet traffic through the tunnel regardless of which port(s) are destined? For example, I don't know what port quicken uses.

And the second Q: is it possible to set it up so that the laptop will automatically open the tunnel if the current WiFi connection is NOT the home network?

Hi, so I've been having problems with my desktop dropping network connections with my home linux file server. Anytime I go to stream a file from it, it may play for 1-5 minutes then dies and the program playing it, wmp or vlc, locks up and I have to kill it from the task manager. It'll play files from another computer just fine and my laptop and sister's desktops play the files from the linux server no problem. I generally play 480 and 720p files but I know it'll handle 1080p video. I also booted a linux live cd on the desktop to narrow the problem down to software or hardware and it also played the same files without a hiccup so that tells me something is wrong with windows.

I've also updated the nic drivers but that didn't help. I'm on the verge of wiping windows and starting over if I can't avoid it. I started noticing the problem last sunday morning when I attempted to play a 720p vid from national geographics. It played for 5 minutes then the connection just drops and occasionally, other network activity on the system would stop too but it's mostly isolated with my server. I don't know what else to do short of reinstall. The desktop has been completely updated.

Problem desktop: windows 7 hp
Sister's desktop: windows 7 hp
Laptop: windows 8 hp
server: ubuntu 10.04

Help with choppy live stream issues?

I like watching live streams on Twitch.tv

Problem is, I'm getting a lot of choppy play watching them even at 480p which is definitely not as ideal as 720p where I get the clearest quality.

I was almost certain the problem was my internet connection. I have to use Comcast, which sucks, but I tried upgrading my package to 50/10 dl/up and it really didn't make a difference. I've tried having less tabs open with only marginal success.

I have two computers, a laptop and a desktop. The laptop is nearly 6 years old and is definitely limping along a bit now so I figured maybe system performance is an issue. However, while the problem occurs on the laptop more frequently (I watch more streams on my laptop) it still happens on my Desktop which, while not top-of-the-line, is more than capable of handling live streams.

Desktop specs:
Windows 7 64-bit
AMD Athlon II x4 620 @ 2.6 GHz
4.00 GB DDR2
Radeon HD 5700 series with 1.00 GB built-in memory
System network adapter
Realtek RTL8168D.8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet

Laptop specs:
Windows Vista 32-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 @1.80 GHz
4.00 GB DDR2
System graphics
Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset Family
System network adapter
Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet
Broadcom 802.11 a/b/g WLAN

My modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB6121

My router is a Netgear WNDR3700 v4
to my knowledge I haven't adjusted any settings on it.

I just want to be able to consistently watch live streams consistently at 720p, but right now I can't do that consistently at all.

Oh, I also use Firefox 20.0.1
