Is it possible to create a new toolbar for the Start Menu in the right (grey) area? I currently have Documents, Pictures and Music. I right clicked and added a new folder of my D drive location of the particular files to access them more easily.

I am missing Downloads and Videos which are in my D drive files so can I add bespoke (new) toolbars?

Additionally, on the existing toolbars can I remove the C drive locations or is this not a good idea?

Many Thanks.

So last night we had a power outage which I am guessing might have something to do with my problem. Basically my computer and everything worked fine last night when power came back on, it still worked in the morning, and it still worked when I got back home after work. However, the internet just randomly crashed while I was watching xfinity, and when I rebooted my PC I got this weird screen flicker effect and my internet only works when connected directly to the modem. When I reboot in safe mode, the screen flicker goes away, but the wireless router is still a no go. Whenever I try a system restore (whether from safe mode or regular), I get the following error: "System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point." I've never taken a system image backup 9as far as I know), so I can't use that. What can I do?

Out of curiosity I checked the properties of my main folder under C:\Users and found that it contains about 55GB of data and 240,000 files. I back up most of my data files every day with Mozy, but I thought it might be good to have some sort of local backup in case of disaster. I'm not interested in a complete up-to-date backup or any time-consuming process that I would do frequently - more like a backup done once or twice a month.

I've noticed that small external hard drives have become very inexpensive. For example, a Seagate 3TB drive can be purchased for about $120. A disk that size would accommodate numerous copies of the files in my primary folder, although I don't know how long it would take to copy them or if such copying is even feasible.

I'd like some advice and suggestions regarding (1) should I buy one of these drives and (2) what sort of backup procedure should I use?

One additional thought: My wife's computer has a similar number of files in her main folder, and I'd want to include that in occasional backups to the same external drive as well.

I have spent all weekend reinstalling windows after all the problems I was having, ive installed all updates an all my programs and one of the problems I had before has returned but not as bad

when i open "my computer" nothing shows in there and the green bar slowly goes along and keeps repeating? - when I had this problem previously it was intermittent (as it is now) but also affected Control Panel and some other folders...where as this is just My computer (for now)

pffft!! computers... who needs them!

EDIT: may have fixed it... think it was UltraISO virtual drive... I turned that off and its working again but early days...

EDIT2: now right click just hangs and hangs...never appears

EDIT3: its back!!

EDIT4: have removed lots of "right-click" context menu stuff using Autoruns (leaving only Winrar) and it seems to be working now.. early days.. dunno which one is culprit, ive a sneaky feeling its ACRONIS TRUE IMAGE 2013 as now i think about it this problem happened after around about the same time I installed that last time too, ive used all other apps for years without issue..this is a new one too me.

EDIT5: nope its back again!!

Ok I have a toshiba satellite L305D-S5974. I was having trouble with my computer starting up it would say windows starting but the the screen would be black with the mouse thing on it but it wouldnt do nothing after that so I did a recovery disk and did a repair. When it restarted windows boot manager came up saying "windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software changed might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3. Click " repair your computer." If you do not havethis disc, contact youreee system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \boot\BCD Status: 0xc0000098 Info: the window boot configuration data file does not contain a vakid OS entry." Now I cant do anything this screen always there. I want to do a factory reset. Is it still posisble to reset without any discs. Or whats the next step? I dont want to mess it up more.. Help please!!

I was trying to get the 'CD' (change directory) DOS command to work with
input redirection (left arrow), but could not do so, tho, thank goodness,
I found PUSHD&POPD so I no longer need CD in my .BAT now. However, I could not
get any of these commands to work either: TYPE, MORE, and especially DIR, as follows:

### used CD to set directory, then did DIR w/o any operands, produced this:
C:\DAD\temp\16bit>dir
Directory of C:\DAD\temp\16bit
05/17/2013 07:41 AM <DIR> .
05/17/2013 07:41 AM <DIR> ..
...
3 File(s) 799,445 bytes
2 Dir(s) 257,805,111,296 bytes free

### here is the contents of the file used for input redirection:
C:\DAD\temp\16bit>type c:\dad\temp\redirin.txt
\dad\temp\32bit

### using input redirection, DIR does NOT(!!??) show the DIR asked of it:
C:\DAD\temp\16bit>dir <\dad\temp\redirin.txt
/OR/
C:\DAD\temp\16bit>dir <\DAD\temp\REDIRIN.txt
/OR/
C:\DAD\temp\16bit>dir <C:\DAD\temp\REDIRIN.txt
Directory of C:\DAD\temp\16bit
05/17/2013 07:41 AM <DIR> .
05/17/2013 07:41 AM <DIR> ..
...
3 File(s) 799,445 bytes
2 Dir(s) 257,805,111,296 bytes free

### however, typing in the file contents manually WITHOUT input redirection works properly:
C:\DAD\temp\16bit>dir \dad\temp\32bit
/OR/
C:\DAD\temp\16bit>dir\dad\temp\32bit
Directory of C:\dad\temp\32bit
05/19/2013 07:28 AM <DIR> .
05/19/2013 07:28 AM <DIR> ..
...
6 File(s) 1,145,711 bytes
2 Dir(s) 257,805,111,296 bytes free

So I played around w/this in my own MASM program using the Win32 API. What I found was,
when I tried to use PEEKCONSOLEINPUT on the redirected STDIN handle, I get rc=6
(ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE), yet if I read it anyway using READFILE, it works properly;
I just pass a numeric 7 in the input redirection file to my program, which my
program sees properly per WinDbg and its' results (I use that value x1000 in SLEEP).

If no input redirection exists, PEEKCONSOLEINPUT works, but returns 0 records, which
is my indicator to NOT issue a READFILE so as NOT to lock up the console waiting for
keyboard input.

I tried opening a handle for CONIN$ under input redirection, and although it worked,
PEEK also said there were 0 records, so this was even WORSE; at least the rc=6 tells me
to ASSUME input redirection exists. I did not attempt to try to read it anyway,
in spite of it saying there was nothing to read, unlike when I got the rc=6 yet
there WAS something to read.

So: although I got input redirection to work in my program, tho flakey, is this
technique correct? And why can't I get DIR, CD, etc to work with input redirection?
Both of my laptops have Win7; 1 with SP1, 1 without and both fail as described above.
If there is a KB fix#, please post it here...

Hi,

as of a few days I get this phenomenon where a folder or file that I have placed on the desktop - say an installation file as in the example - cannot be deleted when I'm done with it, but rather I get 'Could not find this item...' as can be seen below:

the file just happens to be a remnant from a completed d/l placed on the d/t but that has nothing to do with the problem; it happens on any file, system-wide.

Attempting to rename a folder on the desktop (which folder is very much there, as I can access the files within it), I got this:

Checking my permissions yields this result:

so permissions do not seem to be the problem. Any help with this is appreciated 'cause I'm completely perplexed and at a loss here. I either have to find out what causes this and fix it or it's a reinstall.

Everytime I try to shut down windows I receive -

"One program needs to close
waiting for downloadmanage"
This program is preventing windows from shuting down.
I've left the computer running for a full day but this message persists
How can I found this "Download manage" to stop it running.
