Post Overview Of Google Chrome Operating System

    Google Chrome OS

Google Chrome OS is a project by Google Inc. to develop a light computer operating system devoted to using the World Wide Web. Announced on July 7, 2009, it is based on Google's Chrome web browser and the Linux kernel. It will initially be targeted at netbooks, and is set to be released during the second half of 2010. It will run on systems with either x86 or ARM processors. Google has stated that the Google Chrome OS project will be open source by the end of 2009, and that it will use "a new windowing system".

It should be noted there are some key and crazy things to this project that google is trying to accomplish. For one thing basing applications all around the web browser. In order to do so they've worked very hard to optimize javascript execution time and if you look at the google chrome browser experiments you'll see they've done exceptionally well. There's a proof of concept emulator in javascript that's in development. Here google is aiming to get browsers to have access to 3D hardware acceleration. If achieved google can turn the browser and javascript into a cross platform gaming platform playable on just about anything.

That'll give Flash and Java a run for their money. Might cut into the Flex fan base a bit and possibly some of the Silverlight following.

    According to google :

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.

Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.

Haven't they claimed it will be able to start up completely and get you online in only 5-10 seconds? I'm very interested in seeing the raw speed of this OS.

Sounds good to me. I hate having to turn on the pc and wait for ages just so I can get to my google docs and calendar (since I can access these anywhere, why would I use Office on only one machine?)

I am really looking forward to this OS from google. i hop e like other major services from google it comes for FREE too. i know they can give it for free, but i seriously feel that they are going to keep it on a lower cost side coz of the stiff competition they will face from MS
