Exclamation Windows 7 hibernates randomly (and NO idea why)

Hello. My computer hibernates on random times, I don't have ANY idea why.

Some years ago, my laptop was running vista fine. No problems or whatsoever. Then I did an upgrade to Windows 7 and after a few years it was starting randomly hibernate. I didn't managed to get Windows working properly, and finally I installed linux. I don't have any problems with it. Now I really need windows back so I installed Windows 7 (x64). When I startup and choose windows in grub (yes, my linux is still there) It hibernates after 5/10/50/... minutes. I tried disabling hibernate trough cmd, result: shuts down instead of hibernate. I tried installing windows again, same error. Also, in linux I've made a special .vmdk (for VBox) so that it points to my main harddrive, so in virtualbox I tried booting windows from my harddrive and until now I didn't had problems that way.

My computer is an hp pavilion dv7 2120sb, without any modifications. Problem occurs with and without battery.

So PLEASE help me, this is driving me crazy , and I mean really really crazy . I know quite a lot of computers, but this is just too difficult

Seems like you want to disable the hibernate function and that's what Ted posted. What is it you need to achieve?

I'm sittin' here, scratching, and wondering if that PC is not really Hibernating at all, but something else.
Once Hibernate is disabled, it cannot re-enable, by itself. Look elsewhere!

PS: Once Hibernate is disabled and the PC is rebooted, the Hiberfil.sys file will be GONE!

So to understand the problem, you DO want to hibernate at times but the computer is hibernating by itself at random times?

I was wondering if the situation might be related to the way you are booting? I have always used the Windows boot manager and never GRUB when dual booting, but possibly the ACPI system is not being set up properly.

There is a utility (Powercfg) that deals with power situations, but I do not see anything to show what is putting a system to sleep, just what wakes it up.

Yes thats the problem, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
My PC just hibernates on random times and IF I enable hibernation (and I know how to do that) the PC just shuts down at random times instead of hibernate.

Re: Windows 7 hibernates randomly (and NO idea why)

Here are some solutions I found on the net. Hope one will help you:

    1. Might be a malfunctioning multi-media keyboard. If your keyboard has a sleep button, try changing the keyboard.

    2. Laptop battery might be dying. Do you get something that says "Sleep Reason: Battery" that you might not have noticed? Does this happen also when you are NOT on battery?

    3. Go to your Event Viewer, check if there's any event when the issue happened. Tell us the event code.

    4. Laptop overheating may cause random hibernation at times. Check if you have a heating problem. You can use Speedfan to monitor the temperatures of your laptop.

    5. Try to delete your power plan and create a new one: Win7 Laptop Randomly Hibernates??? - Microsoft Answers

    Get back to us.
