Asian Languages problem in Windows 7

    Hi everyone,

I have a number of files with filenames in Korean and Japanese on my computer. Until recently (within the last few days), these names displayed properly in programs like iTunes and Windows Explorer. However, the characters have all now been replaced with boxes, as if I no longer have the Asian language pack installed. I am still able to type in Korean and Japanese characters in Microsoft Office programs, but my files simply aren't displayed properly. It's rather frustrating since I have so many files like this, and now their names are meaningless to me! I am running Windows 7 Home Edition. I have looked at my recent update history, and can't find any update that would seem to me to pertain to languages.

    Thanks for your help!

Re: Asian Languages problem in Windows 7

I too have had this problem. Yesterday I decided to restore my computer using the HP recovery tool. It formatted my windows partition and re-installed Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit. Everything was fine up until I installed some windows updates. I have yet to narrow down which updates have caused this particular problem but once I find this I'll be sure to follow up. I've also noticed that restarting my computer after a fresh boot would solve the issue, even before my "fresh" windows install.

UPDATE: My computer is a HP Envy 14 with Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit installed. I have narrowed it down to a windows update creating the issue. However with me being as smart as I am I forgot to write down which one is was but then Windows decided to install another one right as I went to shut down my computer. All I know is that it works now and it's related to Windows System Updates.

    Hi dvp84,

First of all, I will be providing you two links in which you have to choose which fits under your requirement.

    1. http://download.windowsupdate.com/ms...33662fd500.exe (32 bit Windows 7)

    2. http://download.windowsupdate.com/ms...df3ea4ad27.exe (64 bit Windows 7)

Download one of file but before downloading make sure to check the windows 7 bit.

3 How To Install a Language Pack in Windows 7
    1. Click on Start button, then go to Control Panel.
    2. In Category view, click on Clock, Language, and Region link.
In Icons view, click on Regional and Language icon, and then go to Keyboards and Languages tab.
    3. Click on Install or uninstall display languages under “Region and Language” section orInstall/uninstall languages under “Display Language” section”.
    4. In the “Install or uninstall display languages” wizard, click on Install display languages.
    5. Click Browse computer or network to locate and install language packs manually.
    6. Type or browse to the folder that contains the language pack files. The language file must be in .CAB extension, typical named as “lp.cab”.
Once selected and if at least one valid language pack (either MUI or LIP) is found, the wizard will list all languages available to install, together with native name, type (MUI or LIP) and size.
    7. Tick the check boxes of all languages that want to be installed. Actually, the check boxes are checked by default, so you should untick and uncheck the check boxes of display languages that don’t want to be installed.
    8. Click on Next button when ready.
    9. Check the radio button for I accept the license terms, then click on Next button.
    10. Wait for the installation to finish, which may take a while.
    11. Once all selected language files is installed successfully, a confirmation screen will be shown.
      Click Next button.
    12. If you wish to change to new display language, select the desired display language from the list of languages available. Then, click on Change display language button. Optional is whether to alsoapply the new display language to welcome screen and system accounts.
Else, click on Close button to exit.
    13. I hope these instructions will help you.
