2 Key new features for Windows 8

    Hey gang,

I managed to find a couple articles that discuss 2 of the many new features that will be part of Windows 8..

One is the DSFR which is described as:

"The Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) service is a new multi-master replication engine that is used to keep folders synchronized on multiple servers.

Replicating data to multiple servers increases data availability and gives users in remote sites fast, reliable access to files. DFSR uses a new compression algorithm called Remote Differential Compression (RDC). RDC is a "diff over the wire" protocol that can be used to efficiently update files over a limited-bandwidth network. RDC detects insertions, removals, and rearrangements of data in files, enabling DFSR to replicate only the deltas (changes) when files are updated.

The DFSR service uses RPC to communicate between servers. It replicates a folder scope defined by the replicated folder path. The set of computers participating in replication is defined by a configured topology of connections and is called a replication group. Multiple replicated folders can be included in a replication group, with memberships selectively enabling or disabling specific replicated folders. The DFSR service uses WMI to configure server-wide parameters, while global parameters and certain replicated folder-specific parameters are configured using Active Directory. DFSR also uses WMI to expose monitoring information regarding specific objects such as replicated folders and connections."

The other (which isn't exactly new but it isn't very old either ) will be major improvements BranchCache which is described as:

"BranchCache was a new feature developed in Windows 7. Basically when data from an intranet website or file server is accessed, it caches those files locally so the next user can access them more quickly. Major improvements can be expected for BranchCache."

This all sounds just like a new server to me. Like Server 2010. Not a new windows os.

Hmmm, so when do you think we can start to look forward to a new Alpha or Beta?

Do you think there's any way that by using the Alpha or Beta and submitting perhaps, oh say, a required number of feedback items that Microsoft would be willing to let these pilots go with a free copy of the OS?

Microsoft had a predetermined number of "invited" testers with both Vista and 7 that were awarded free copies of the OS for their contributions. Perhaps the same offer will be carried over to Windows 8. I don't know what the requirements for "invitation" is. Perhaps Microsoft Connect membership might be an initial screening requirement, - - maybe something else. Watch your email for your "invitation". Understand that this offer DID NOT apply to public beta participants; only to private invitations.

    Midori !!!!

Is not Windows 8 rumored to still be an NTFS/Windows OS? I have read rumors that some new technology will be employed (MUCH newer than NT "New Technology" that has been around for about 15 years or so), but not nearly so radical as the OS code named "Midori" which is rumored to be a "non windows" system. I have seen an employment advertisement (that I cannot locate a link to at the moment) for team leaders on the Windows 8 development team.

I am interested to learn whether Midori is slated to replace Windows 8, or if it is a completely independent OS that may be employed concurrently with Windows 7 or 8 (or XP), or if it is to be a replacement for all windows systems.
