Intel Shows First Six-Core Desktop Processor

The Core i7-980X is targeted for gamers, but 3D Artisans and Video Content Creators will love it. The new chip is faster and more power-efficient than the previous processors. The chip will run at 3.33 GHz.

New architecture, more processors, capable of running six threads simultaneously according to Intel. The new processor code named "Gulf-town" is on display at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The Gulf-town processors are based on Westmere architecture and will be made using the 32 NM process, which will be an upgrade over existing Nehalem chips made using the 45 NM.

On line retailers have already started taking orders, which indicates that the "Processors" should be released soon. A European retailer Alternate started selling the processor for $ 1,493.00. He also listed the chip as having 12 MB of L3 cache with the capacity to scale the clock speed 3.6 GHz. (The manufacturer of this beast is "Falcon Northwest").

this "capable of running six threads" should read capable of running twelve threads as i7 processors have the ability to run 2 threads per core via hyperthreading
